Geometry Considerations
The molecular and electronic geometries are the same if there are no
lone pairs around the central atom. |
Instances in which the two are different occur when there are lone
pairs around the central atom as in this. |
When dealing with electronic geometry, count electron groups and call
it what it is based on that number only. Here's
an example. |
Remember the electronic geometry is the most stable arrangement. |
For the molecular geometry, count the groups of electrons and find
that category. Then count the lone pairs and further categorize it (bent,
etc.).In the last case, there are 4 groups. There is 1 lone pair, so the
geometry is trigonal planar. |
